Hoveton Community Council

In April 2019, the speeds of over 37,000 vehicles were recorded by our SAM2 device on Tunstead Road. The speed limit on this stretch of road is 30mph, but more than 20,000 vehicles were recorded at speeds of 35mph or more, with almost 2,000 of these vehicles travelling at speeds of 45mph or more.

Speeding on Tunstead Road was recently again adopted as a policing priority by the Safer Neighbourhood Action Panel, thanks in part to the data collected by our SAM2. Hoveton’s Beat Manager, PC Tom Gibbs, continues to work hard to tackle the ongoing problems with speeding in our village. This month, PC Gibbs has been undertaking speed enforcement activities on Tunstead Road, particularly near Broadland High Ormiston Academy, with a number of drivers receiving warnings and traffic offence reports (tickets) for excess speed.

Meanwhile, Hoveton Parish Council has agreed to make Stalham Road an approved SAM2 location, so data may be gathered and provided as evidence of need for speed enforcement on Stalham Road, as has been done on Tunstead Road. A resident has kindly volunteered to look after the SAM2 while it is located on Stalham Road and a volunteer is looking after the SAM2 while it is on Tunstead Road, but sadly Hoveton Parish Council doesn’t have the human resources necessary to rotate the sign to other suggested locations (Horning Road, Horning Road West and Station Road). Local residents who wish to see the SAM2 used on other roads are therefore asked to consider volunteering their help to make this possible. Hoveton Parish Council receives regular newsletters and reports from the Stalham Safer Neighbourhood Team and works closely with members of the team on local issues. Safer Neighbourhood Action Panel (SNAP) meetings are held regularly to agree local policing priorities, along with regular Public Engagement meetings and surgeries.
